The Office for the Academic Experience is responsible for programs that provide students and faculty with the support services necessary for a high-quality academic experience. Academic Advising; New Student Programs, including Orientation, Living and Learning Communities, Provisional Students and Peer Facilitators; Undergraduate Academic Services; the Office of the First-Year Experience; Student Retention; and the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning report directly to the Associate Vice President for the Academic Experience, Dr. Kay Smith.
Dr. Smith is a member of the Provost’s Academic Council and serves as a member of the General Education committee. She oversees the general development of academic engagement programs and services and works closely with the Academic Experience directors to assure quality and coordination. Because of the scope of College of Charleston’s First-Year Experience program, Dr. Smith is actively involved in faculty recruitment and training. She also participates in the First-Year Experience program by teaching a First-Year Seminar, “Shakespeare on Screen” each fall semester.
