Kay H. Smith is currently the Associate Vice President for the Academic Experience at the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. Smith received her Ph.D. in English Renaissance literature from Emory University. She has published and presented extensively on Shakespeare and film, as well as on first-year experience, general education and residential college programs. At College of Charleston, she has primary responsibility for First-Year Experience, General Education, and academic support services including Orientation, Advising, New Student Programs, Center for Student Learning, Undergraduate Academic Services, as well as retention and early-alert programs. Prior to coming to the College of Charleston, Smith was a faculty member and administrator at Appalachian State University, where she directed the Watauga College program, Appalachian’s long-standing and innovative residential college. She later went on to become chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. At College of Charleston, Smith is currently involved in developing the Center for Excellence in Peer Education and in various e-portfolio projects.
