General Information
Driving Directions
Local RestaurantsDear ASE Participants:
As we near the ASE conference, you may have questions about on campus events. The following are some simple guidelines for conference orientation, beginning Thursday May 29, 2008. If you are flying into the Charleston Area International Airport outside of the baggage claim area, through the exit door, is the shuttle pickup. Go to the shuttle pickup booth and ask for transportation to your hotel room. The shuttles depart every 15-20 minutes, and are $12 per person. You can also take a taxi to your destination, which will cost between $25 and $30. See this link for MAPS of the College of Charleston campus: http://www.cofc.edu/about/campusmaps.html
- If you are staying on-campus at Liberty Residence Hall, ask the shuttle driver to take you to Liberty Street (Map #102) on the College of Charleston campus.
- Check-in time for the Liberty Street Residence Hall is Thursday May 29, from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM; give your name and ASE affiliation at the main desk.
- If you are staying at any other Residence Hall or if you arrive at hours other than 12:00-6:00 on Thursday or any other day, you must go to Joe Berry Residence Hall (Map #6) between 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, Customer Service Desk.
- If you arrive at a time before 7:00 AM or after 11:00 PM on any day, you will need to make special arrangements for check-in; you can do this at any hour by calling 843-864-7224 and talking with the on-duty Hall Director.
4:00 – 6:00 PM Conference Check-in (Opening Event May 29): we will hold ASE Conference Check-in for all participants at Physicians Auditorium (Map # 47), in the lobby area. All participants should check in during this time to receive an ID badge, ASE conference packet with complete program, and a copy of the first ASE book series from Michigan State University Press (just out!), You will need your ID badge to get into all events; the packet also contains a few other items on the local area. Look for ASE signs to guide you to the auditorium; ASE Interns will be present to help you find your way.
5:00-7:00 PM General gathering of all participants to mingle and meet; we will serve finger food and ice tea; in the lobby area of Physician’s Auditorium.
7:00-9:00 PM Opening program, introductions and key note address by Dr. Barbara Newman on: "Charles Williams and the Companions of the Co-inherence."
Friday May 30th – Sunday June 1st, program presentations: All meeting rooms for the conference will be in the Beatty Center (Map #103B), on Liberty Street. Look for the glass atrium entrance, several stories tall and the ASE sign by the door. Enter through these doors and proceed up the stairs to your right to the Tate Center (Map #103A), across the second floor walkway bridge.
- The Tate Center Gallery is where we will serve coffee, tea, rolls and bagels from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM (and other times during the day). The program will start immediately at 9:00 in the assigned rooms in the Program Guide (in ASE packet).
Presenters: Please limit your presentations to 25 minutes. Presentations will be ended at 30 minutes, we hope to have 15 minutes at the end of each session for questions.
If you are using images, every room has a computer with Power Point and overhead projector. We recommend that you copy your program onto a flash drive and simply plug the flash drive into the room computer. We cannot guarantee that any computer you bring will interface with our equipment. Best practice is Power Point on flash drive.
There will be a Book Sale room in the Beatty Center, open from 8:30 AM until 5:00 PM; we have over 50 books on esotericism for purchase, many by ASE presenters; sales will be managed by the College of Charleston Bookstore (not the ASE).
Performances: All performances will be in the Wachovia Auditorium (Room 115 Beatty), we will also meet in this room for all sessions on Sunday morning, June 1.
- Friday 4:00-5:00 PM Sacred Music of India Dr. Guy Beck, the author of Sonic Theology and other publications on music of India, will offer a live musical performance of sacred music of India accompanied by the Harmonium.
Dr. Beck studied Indian classical music for six years in Calcutta, India, from Sri Sailen Banerjee of the Tansen Music College, named after Tansen the legendary singer of Akbar's court in the 16th century. He also learned music from Sri Ashish Goswami (disciple of the late Ustad Bade Gulam Ali Khan), and from Sri Arun Bhaduri of the Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta. He obtained several academic degrees in Indian music while in India, and was also trained in the devotional music of the temples of Vrindaban and Mathura. Performing vocal music for over twenty years, he has appeared on Indian TV (Door Darshan), Radio Nepal, and in several All-India Music Conferences and has given numerous performances in the USA.
- Saturday 4:00-5:00 PM Magical Walking Dr. Lance Gharavi
Certain explanations in life are often neither certain nor very explanatory. That is what he discovered one year. To understand what really happened, he started walking. And that led to magic. A woman was involved. And books. And memories. And more explanations, certainly… He had no idea that magic and walking were connected… Now, he is trying to untangle himself from a plot he does not know with stories he can’t understand and hands that will not obey. And then, of course, there are the ducks…
Featuring veteran performer, Lance Gharavi, Certain Explanations/Magical Walking is a solo performance work with sound and media. Written by AJ Sabatini and directed by Jacob Pinholster, the production also features the work of media designer Michael Matthews and composer Robert Kilman.
