Lesson Plan Format

About Our Format

Teachers, who have attended our teacher training workshops, are encouraged to submit lesson plans for dissemination. For clarity and ease of use, we have developed the following lesson plan format.

In general, the following components can be found in our teacher-created lesson plans.

Cover

The title, grade level, subject, learning module theme, and the name(s) of the lesson plan team.

Learning Outcomes & Standards

Content Standard(s): the complete state and/or national standard the lesson meets, i.e. Standard 3-2 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the exploration and settlement of South Carolina and the United States. Indicators/Process Standard(s): the state/national indicator/process standard according to subject, i.e. 3-2.7 Explain the transfer of the institution of slavery into South Carolina from the West Indies, including the slave trade and the role of African Americans in the developing plantation economy…

Other learning outcomes that students should know or know how to do after completing this lesson.

Essential Question(s)

List of essential question(s) the unit will focus on. For more about essential questions, click here.

Historical Background

A summary of the history-social science and other content relevant to the unit, which does not exceed five pages and includes citations.

Primary Sources, Other Readings, and Materials

List of all materials used by teacher and students.

Procedures/Guided Instruction

A detailed description of how to prepare and implement the lesson. Including: pacing information and all descriptive information that will enable others to teach the lesson, formative assessment strategies used to check for understanding throughout the lesson, and any scaffolding focus questions.

Assessment Task

Describes how the students’ understanding of the essential questions will be determined and assessment task(s)/project(s) that will serve as evidence for student learning. Includes a rubric and/or scoring guide. For suggestions of others, refer to Designing Assessment Task/Project list handout.

Annotated Bibliography

List of all materials cited as well as any others helpful in providing historical background for the lesson, with one or two lines explaining the significance of each source as related to the lesson.

Appendix

Includes sample hand-outs, rubrics, etc. needed to teach the lesson.
