2009 Spring Commencement About 260 undergraduate communication majors celebrated their graduation on Saturday morning, May 9, 2009. Kristen Thompson, a communication major with a concentration in communication studies, was the winner of the 2009 Bishop Robert Smith Award, the highest award given by the College of Charleston. Thompson, also a political science major, joins five other Department of Communication alumni and alumnae as a winner of this award. Seven Master of Arts in Communication graduates were recognized at the graduate commencement on Friday, May 8. Those earning degrees in 2009 also were invited to attend a banquet on April 28, 2009. Over 100 faculty, administrators, and students were present as graduates were honored and awards given to the department’s outstanding students. An emphasis on oral communication is nearly as old as the College of Charleston itself. At the College's first formal commencement ceremony in the 1790s, every graduating student was required to deliver a speech. Today, communication is one of the largest undergraduate majors at the College of Charleston. |
