Local reporter named Alumnus of the Year

The College of Charleston Alumni Association has named Ron J. Menchaca,’98 Alumnus of the Year. Menchaca is a graduate of the Department of Communication.

The Alumnus of the Year Award recognizes a graduate who has contributed significantly to his or her profession, community or to the College of Charleston during the past year.

Menchaca, reporter for The Post and Courier, was named the South Carolina Press Association’s Journalist of the Year in March 2008.  Menchaca also was part of a team that won the South Carolina Press Association’s Reporting in Depth award for coverage of the June Sofa Super Store fire in Charleston.  That same team won first-place National Headliner Award honors for investigative journalism in covering the fire.

“Through his investigative reporting, Ron has made a difference. His stories have led to reforms that affect all of our lives and highlight the need for the press to pursue important issues,” said Karen Burroughs Jones, ’74 Executive Director of the College of Charleston Alumni Association.  “It is hard, time-consuming work that requires integrity and never-ending pursuit of the truth,” Jones added.

Menchaca regularly lectures and gives feedback to students in communication courses at the College of Charleston.  He is a past chair of the department’s Alumni Advisory Council.

He discovered a talent for story-telling and a gift for writing while a non-traditional student majoring in communication at the College of Charleston.
