COMM Major Has Essay in the New York Times

Kahley Sullivan, a senior communication major, had an article on the college experience published by the New York Times.

Sullivan’s essay, “The Joy of (Mom’s) Cooking,” was one of 25 articles published on lessons learned at college. Over 800 students submitted essays for consideration by the Times education editors.

Of the 25 entries chosen for publication, six came from colleges in the South. Other published entries came from students at such institutions as Connecticut, Duke, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Yale.

Students in Joyce Barrett’s feature writing course for Spring 2009 were required to submit an essay to this competition. Barrett, an award-winning journalist and two-time Fulbright scholar, regularly teaches media writing courses in the Department of Communication.

“I’m so proud of Kahley,” said Barrett.

“Kahley’s essay is a thoughtful and touching reflection on life away from one’s childhood home,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “We congratulate her on publishing this tribute to her mother’s influence.”
