Charleston Debater Wins Ohio State Tournament 

Don Bailey, a freshman undeclared major from Fountain Inn, SC, and member of the College of Charleston Forensic and Debate Team, was the winner in Lincoln-Douglas debate at an Ohio State University forensic tournament on March 1, 2008. 

At the tournament, hosted by Ohio State University, Bailey defeated Ohio State and Otterbein College students to compile an undefeated preliminary round record and to win his final-round debate on a 3-0 decision.  Bailey also was the first-place overall speaker in Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Other universities attending the Ohio State tournament in Columbus, Ohio, included Indiana University, Miami-Ohio, UNC-Charlotte, Clemson, and Oberlin College.

“Don is a very talented first-year debater,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication.  “His win at this important tournament says a great deal about his prospects for future success.”

Dr. Deborah Socha McGee, Associate Professor of Communication, coached Bailey at the Ohio State tournament.

The College of Charleston Forensic and Debate Team was founded in the 1890s.  Today, the team is open to students from all schools and majors at the College of Charleston.  Students complete in debate, public speaking, and oral interpretation events.  The Department of Communication has administrative responsibility for the team.
