Graduate Student Intern Is Volunteer of the Year

Bryn Burkard, a graduate student in the Department of Communication, has been named the Volunteer of the Year by the Center for Women in Charleston.

Burkard has been an intern at the Center for Women during the last several months. She will graduate with a Master of Arts in Communication in December 2008.

The Center for Women, an award-winning non-profit organization, is the only comprehensive women’s development center in South Carolina. The Center has reached more than 70,000 women since 1990 with counseling, peer support groups, referrals, and educational programs.

The Center for Women’s Executive Director is Jennet Robinson Alterman. Her father, Emmett Robinson, was a College of Charleston graduate, served as Professor of Public Speaking, and was the Debate Coach at the College from 1942 through 1954.

“We congratulate Bryn Burkard on this award, which she richly deserves,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communicaton. “Bryn is one of over 100 communication students who complete internships each year in the department. Like Bryn, many of those student interns are unpaid and volunteer thousands of hours annually to non-profit organizations.”
