Patrick Caddell, Pollster, former Presidential Adviser, Speaks at the College

The College of Charleston’s Department of Political Science and Department of Communication are pleased to welcome public opinion pollster and former presidential adviser Patrick Caddell to the College of Charleston campus.  Caddell will speak on “Politics and Communication in the Age of Obama.”  The event will be held at noon on Friday, February 13 in the second floor conference rooms of 9 College Way. A reception will follow Caddell’s presentation.

A Harvard graduate, Caddell’s experience in politics began before he completed his college degree.  After serving as chief public opinion pollster and strategist for the McGovern presidential campaign in 1972, Caddell was described by Theodore H. White as “the youngest senior adviser to a presidential campaign in American political history.”  At that time, Caddell also became the youngest person on Richard Nixon’s “enemies list.”

Caddell would serve as chief public opinion pollster and senior strategist for the 1976 and 1980 Carter campaigns.  He also was a personal adviser to President Carter.

Since 1980, Caddell has provided public opinion research for over 150 political campaigns.  In the private sector, his clients have included Apple Computer Company, Coca Cola, Exxon, Westinghouse, General Electric, General Motors, Sears, Shell, Citi Bank, JP Morgan, and Federated Department Stores.

In addition to his political work, Caddell has been a consultant and adviser for numerous motion picture and television projects.  He was a writer, producer, and consultant for West Wing, the Emmy-winning NBC television series.  He also has been a faculty member teaching politics at the University of California at Santa Barbara.

The appearance by Caddell continues the Department of Communication's Executive Speaker Series, which features nationally prominent leaders in the communication professions.

"Patrick Caddell has been a political visionary and innovator for over three decades," said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication.  "We look forward to learning from him."
