Communication Department Partners with Chicora Elementary The Department of Communication has announced a partnership with Chicora Elementary, a newly approved partial magnet school located in North Charleston. Faculty, staff and students in the Department of Communication will collaborate with Chicora to create communication programming for students in the K-5 school. Chicora will become the first elementary school with a magnet program in Charleston County District 4. Chicora Elementary students will publish a newspaper, host a TV news program, develop oral and written communication skills, and participate in project-based learning. The school will hire a lead teacher for its communication classes and a coordinator for its magnet program, which will be available to all of the school's students. “We are thrilled to be a part of this program and confident this new curriculum will create a wonderful opportunity for Chicora students,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “We look forward to working with Principal Camille Lee and her colleagues at Chicora.” Five Charleston County neighborhood schools will open next fall as magnet-like schools. District officials also gave the go-ahead to Haut Gap Middle on Johns Island, Laing Middle in Mount Pleasant and Memminger and Mitchell elementary schools on the peninsula. With the largest undergraduate major at the College of Charleston, the Department of Communication enrolls more than 800 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Students in the department study such topics as political communication, interpersonal communication, journalism, and public relations. The department is housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
