In a landmark year for new students at the College of Charleston, the Department of Communication will set a new all-time record for course enrollments in the 2009 Fall Semester. While final data will not be available for several weeks, the College expects the new students for Fall 2009 to be the largest class in the institution’s 239-year history. Not surprisingly, Department of Communication enrollments have grown to accommodate the influx of new students. The Department of Communication had 2,448 enrollments at the end of the first week of the 2009 Fall Semester. The previous departmental enrollment record was set during the 2004 Fall Semester, with 2,414 enrollments. At least two dozen additional enrollments are expected in communication courses for Fall 2009, as students register for internships and independent-study courses. Final enrollment figures will be available in October. “As we have made more courses available, students from all majors at the College of Charleston have had the chance to take one or more communication courses,” said Brian McGee, Chair of the Department of Communication. “We are pleased that so many students not majoring in communication now have the ability to take courses in our department,” said McGee. “Communication instruction always has been central to the great liberal arts tradition of the College.” The department’s record enrollment for Fall 2009 includes the largest number of undergraduate students ever to take an introductory public speaking course in a single semester. As has been the case for many years, the undergraduate communication major is one of the largest at the College. Each year, about 12% of the College’s new graduates are communication majors. The department leads the institution in the number of students studying abroad and the number of students completing internships. The Department of Communication’s graduate program also has set its all-time record for enrollment in a semester. 2009 marks the tenth anniversary of the Department of Communication, and the 220th anniversary of communication instruction at the College of Charleston. With one of the largest undergraduate majors at the College of Charleston, the Department of Communication enrolls over 800 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Students in the department study such topics as political communication, interpersonal communication, journalism, and public relations. The department is housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. |
