Health Communication Specialist Joins Department

Jenifer Kopfman, Health Education Specialist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, will join the Department of Communication as an assistant professor, beginning in August 2007.

Kopfman will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods, health communication, and other subjects in which she has expertise.

"We are fortunate to have such a talented and experienced professional join our faculty," said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication.  "Jenifer Kopfman will bring great expertise and energy to our classroom and adds to our already existing depth in the area of health communication."

Kopfman will join four other College of Charleston communication faculty with research and teaching interests in health communication.

Kopfman earned her bachelor's degree at Miami University in Ohio and her master's and doctoral degrees at Michigan State University.  Prior to her work at CDC, Kopfman worked most recently at Cleveland State University, where she served as assistant chair of the communication department.  She also has taught at the University of Arizona and the University of Toledo.

A highly productive researcher, Kopfman has published articles in such journals as the Journal of Health Communication, Communication Research Reports, Health Communication, the Journal of Applied Communication Research, and Communication Studies.  She has presented over 25 papers at regional, national, and international communication conventions and has won several research awards, including the Outstanding Dissertation Award of the Speech Communication Association and the International Communication Association.

Kopfman said she is thrilled to be joining the faculty at College of Charleston. “I’m excited to return to academia, especially in the beautiful and historic setting of downtown Charleston.  Teaching my favorite classes and working with talented colleagues in the Communication department is an ideal opportunity that I could not refuse.”
