Over 250 Graduate with Degrees in Communication

A few rain showers didn't prevent over 250 communication majors from celebrating their graduation on Mother's Day, along with about 1,300 other College of Charleston seniors at the spring commencement ceremony on May 13, 2007.

Communication majors were over 16 percent of the College of Charleston undergraduates completing their degrees for Spring 2007.

Megan Marshall of Newberry, SC, a communication major with a concentration in corporate and organizational communication, was one of 10 students to graduate from the College of Charleston with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

"We are thrilled for these students and honor their accomplishments," said Brian McGee, chair of the Department.  "As graduates of our highly selective institution, they continue the great tradition of one of the nation's oldest universities.  We look forward to following their careers as they put their communication degrees to work."

An emphasis on oral communication is nearly as old as the College of Charleston itself.  At the College's first formal commencement ceremony in the 1790s, every graduating student was required to deliver a speech.  Today, communication is one of the largest majors at the College of Charleston.

Communication majors study interpersonal communication, organizational communication, public and political communication, mass communication, and other communication contexts.  They pursue a wide range of careers in which highly effective writing and speaking skills are essential, along with critical thinking, research, and problem-solving abilities.
