Leigh Moscowitz, Assistant Professor of Communication, has won the nation’s top award for a recently completed doctoral dissertation in the field of mass communication research. Moscowitz has been named the 2009 Nafziger-White-Salwen Dissertation Award winner by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She will receive the award, which includes a cash prize, at the association’s national meeting in August. Moscowitz joined the College of Charleston’s Department of Communication in 2008, shortly after completing her doctoral dissertation at Indiana University. Her dissertation, “For Better or For Worse: News Discourse, Gay Rights Activism, and the Same-Sex Marriage Debate,” was completed using multiple research methods and concerned ongoing media coverage of social movement advocacy relevant to the marriage controversy. “We congratulate Leigh Moscowitz on this prestigious award,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “Winning the highest honor given for dissertation research in this field is very difficult.” Moscowitz has quickly made an impact at the College of Charleston. The students of the Department of Communication voted her the department’s best undergraduate teacher for 2008-2009, an award normally given to members of the faculty with many years of service. Leigh Moscowitz joins two other Department of Communication faculty who won national dissertation awards at the beginning of their careers. With one of the largest undergraduate majors at the College of Charleston, the Department of Communication enrolls about 800 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Students in the department study such topics as political communication, interpersonal communication, journalism, and public relations. The department is housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. |
