Presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Barack Obama visits the College of Charleston

Presidential candidate and U.S. Senator Barack Obama spoke as part of the Department of Communication's Bully Pulpit Series on Thursday, January 10, on the College of Charleston downtown campus.

This event took place outdoors in the historic Cistern Yard, in front of Randolph Hall. The Obama campaign estimated an audience of 4,500. Media accounts carried crowd estimates of as many as 6,000.

The event included a surprise appearance by U.S. Senator and former presidential nominee John Kerry, who endorsed the presidential candidacy of Senator Obama. The endorsement received national and international media coverage.

“We were pleased to give our students and the Charleston community to opportunity to learn more about Senator Obama and his views,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “The enthusiastic reception of all three presidential candidates demonstrates the great interest that our students have in the presidential campaign and, in particular, how presidential candidates would use the bully pulpit powers of the presidency to inform, mobilize, and persuade the public.”

Senator Obama was the third presidential candidate in the non-partisan Bully Pulpit Series on presidential communication. Previous speakers in the series included U.S. Senator John McCain and U.S. Representative Ron Paul.
