Corporate Communications Executive, Ken Sternad, to Speak at the College of Charleston The College of Charleston Department of Communication continues its Executive Speaker Series with the appearance of prominent corporate communications executive Ken Sternad. The on-campus event will be held March 30 at 2 p.m. in the 9 College Way Conference Room. As president of The UPS Foundation, Ken Sternad is responsible for its global philanthropic initiatives, which totaled more than $100 million in 2008. He manages volunteer programs, grants, education initiatives, relationships with diversity partners and disaster response activities. Sternad also focuses on leveraging UPS’s financial, intellectual and physical assets to support organizations and programs that address community safety, nonprofit effectiveness, economic and global literacy, environmental sustainability and diversity. “We are honored to host Mr. Sternad,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “His timely presentation titled, ‘Charting a Career Course: Lessons from a 30-Year Communications Career at UPS’ will complement classroom discussions about communication practices in a challenging economic period.” Sternad previously served as vice president of Public Relations for UPS, directing all media relations, reputation management, executive communications, financial communications and marketing public relations activities for the company worldwide. After working as a daily newspaper reporter, Sternad began his UPS career in 1977 as a Communications supervisor. He was promoted to Public Relations manager in 1982 and to director of Media Relations in 1985. After managing UPS package delivery operations in Baltimore, Md. for two years, Sternad was named to head the Public Relations department in 1990. As one of the largest undergraduate majors at the College of Charleston, the Department of Communication enrolls more than 800 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Students in the department study such topics as political communication, interpersonal communication, journalism, and public relations. The department is housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
