Thompson Wins Bishop Robert Smith Award

Kristen Thompson, a communication major with a concentration in communication studies, is the winner of the 2009 Bishop Robert Smith Award, the highest undergraduate award given by the College of Charleston.

A native of South Carolina, Thompson also is earning a major in political science. She will graduate from the College in May 2009.

Thompson joins five previous Department of Communication alumnae and alumni, Melody J. Edelman ’98, Billie J. Murray ’00, Lacey Elgie ’02, Rebecca McCarson ’05, and Matthew McClellan ’08, as winners of this award.

“We congratulate Kristen Thompson on this impressive achievement,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “The Bishop Robert Smith Award recognizes the College of Charleston student who has excelled inside and outside the classroom. Ms. Thompson is a model student in every respect.”

A Department of Communication graduate has been a winner or co-winner of the Bishop Robert Smith Award in six of the past 12 years. About 11% of all College of Charleston undergraduates complete the communication major.
