South Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture to Speak at College of Charleston

Hugh Weathers, Commissioner, South Carolina Department of Agriculture will speak at the College of Charleston in Beatty Center Room 320 on Wednesday, Oct.7, at 6:00 p.m.

Weathers will address an audience of students on the importance of public speaking in his career.

Weather was invited to campus by Earl Capps, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Communication and the teacher for multiple sections of the basic public speaking course.

“We thank Hugh Weathers for taking the time to discuss the importance of public speaking with our students,” said Brian McGee, chair of the Department of Communication. “We are grateful for his willingness to speak with students who are taking this course, which is so critical to the future success of all college graduates,” said McGee.

Weathers was appointed as Interim Commissioner of Agriculture for the State of South Carolina by the Executive Order of Governor Mark Sanford in 2004 and Commissioner of Agriculture in 2005. In 2006, he was elected by the people of South Carolina to serve a four-year term as Commissioner of Agriculture.

Commissioner Weathers is a University of South Carolina Magna Cum Laude graduate with a BS in Accounting and Finance and a former Corporate Banking Officer with C&S National Bank. He is also a partner of Circle W Farms, a row crop farming operation in Bowman.

With one of the largest undergraduate majors at the College of Charleston, the Department of Communication enrolls more than 800 students in its undergraduate and graduate programs. Students in the department study such topics as political communication, interpersonal communication, journalism, and public relations. The department is housed in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
