Communication Professor Appears on Wheel of Fortune

Deborah Socha McGee, Associate Professor of Communication and Director of the Speaking Lab at the College of Charleston, appeared as a contestant on Wheel of Fortune on February 5, 2007.

The Wheel of Fortune game show taped a series of shows at the Charleston Area Convention from Jan. 12-14, 2006. McGee participated in one of five shows taped on Jan. 12.

"I come from a family of people who love puzzles and word games," said McGee. "I've wanted to be on Wheel of Fortune for 20 years. This is a dream come true for me. I'll try to be a good representative for the College of Charleston."

Persistence paid off for McGee, who tried unsuccessfully in October to get an audition for the show at the Citadel Mall. McGee eventually had her chance when auditions were held on the College of Charleston campus. She was called back for a second audition a few weeks later.

Wheel of Fortune has been in syndication for 23 years. According to the official Web site for the show, www.wheeloffortune.com, fewer than 500 contestants are selected each year. The show has awarded over $162 million since its inception.

Wheel of Fortune airs in many foreign countries, including Canada, France, Mexico and Vietnam.

Information about Wheel of Fortune tickets is available at the WCBD Web site. The deadline for ticket applications is Dec. 15.

The College of Charleston's Department of Communication offers bachelor's and master's degrees and employs almost 40 full- and part-time faculty. The National Communication Association recently identified the College of Charleston as one of 25 universities in the United States where communication is the largest single undergraduate major.
