Kathleen DeHaan received her Ph.D. at Northwestern University, after earning a master's degree at Emerson College (where she was named Outstanding Graduate Instructor and also won two Outstanding Student Awards). Her B.A. is from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.  
 
Her course offerings have included Communication Theory, Training and Development, Speechwriting, Rhetoric, Organizational Communication as well as Rhetoric and Identity.
 
Dr. DeHaan's research interests include rhetoric and public address, immigrant rhetoric, organizational communication, political communication, and communication training.  Her current research explores immigrant letters as forums for identity construction.  
 
She has received several research awards, most notably a Balch Fellowship. Students at College of Charleston recognized her as one of the top five professors by awarding her with a Golden Key Honorary membership. Other recognitions include selection to the prestigious Charleston “40 Under 40.”
 
In addition to her work in the Department of Communication, DeHaan serves as the Associate Dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
 
Dr. DeHaan has worked in the fields of marketing, advertising and speechwriting. An Illinois native, DeHaan is an avid fan of her Illini.  She enjoys athletics, photography, outdoor activities, animals, cooking and traveling.
