Tom Heeney is an accomplished teacher and scholar of rhetoric and communication. He came to C of C in 1991 after teaching as an assistant professor at Stonehill College and Bentley College in New England. Dr. Heeney received his Ph.D. in Communication at University of Southern California in 1986, after receiving a master's in that field at USC in 1976. His undergraduate degree, also in Communication, came from California State University-Long Beach in 1974. He has won three National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships to attend postgraduate summer seminars at UC-Berkeley (2000), Emory University (1993), and University of Illinois (1991).

In addition to regular teaching of departmental core courses such as Public Speaking (Comm 104) and Intro to Communication (Comm 210), Dr. Heeney offers courses in Rhetoric of Social Movements (Comm 387), Theories of Rhetoric (Comm 382), and Visual Communication. He has organized several summer travel courses in corporate communication to New York City and Washington, D.C. and taught aboard the S.S. Universe Explorer during Semester at Sea (1998). In Fall 2001, he taught at our "European campus" in Annot, France.

He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the International Society for the History of Rhetoric and the International Society for the Study of Argument, and the International Communication Association. He has delivered papers at several prestigious international conferences in recent years, and has published two refereed journal articles in the past few years, as well as two book chapters for Amsterdam-based publications.

Dr. Heeney also maintains a stellar record of service at the College. Presently he is Chair of the Department's Executive Committee. He has been a Departmental Senator, chaired the Faculty Senate Budget Committee, and served on the department's Corporate and Organizational Communication Committee, Communication Studies Committees, and the College's Student Affairs/Athletics Committees.
