Shirley Moore, Assistant Professor Emerita, retired from the Department of Communication in 2006 after teaching at the College of Charleston for over 30 years.  She continues to teach oral interpretation courses at the College. In 2002 she was presented the College's highest honor, the Distinguished Teaching Award, from an impressive list of nominees in various disciplines. She won the Chair's Award for Departmental Service in 2005.

Professor Moore received the Master of Arts degree in English Literature from N.C. State University in Raleigh in 1973, after completing an Associates of Arts degree at Mars Hill College (NC) and a Bachelor of Arts degree at Georgetown College (KY). With a double major in English Literature and Performance Arts, Professor Moore completed some 30 additional semester hours of post-graduate work in Creative Writing, Speech Therapy, Communication, and Performance Arts at Western Carolina University, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and the University of South Carolina. Before joining the College of Charleston faculty in 1976, Professor Moore served as a visiting instructor at several colleges in the Charleston area.

In addition to her devotion to excellence in the teaching of writing and performance courses, Professor Moore is in her own right an accomplished performer, director and critic. She has performed for local, national and international audiences, and she has directed locally at the Dock Street and Queen Street theatres. She also organized, and for a number of years, directed several groups of young players who performed each spring at area schools and for the popular Piccolo Spoleto Arts Festival.

As an original member of the communication faculty at the College of Charleston, Professor Moore assisted with the development of the department's undergraduate major and minors.  She is the first faculty member to retire from the department, which was founded in 1999.
