Admissions Criteria

To enroll in graduate-level courses at the College of Charleston , students are admitted to one of four categories: regular, non-degree, provisional or transient. The requirements for regular admission into the master of arts in communication program are given below.

• Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution; minimum GPA 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale), with a 3.0 GPA in the major
• Minimum GRE composite score of 1000 on the combined verbal and quantitative sections and 4 on the writing assessment section (see this link for more information on the GRE)
• Acceptable coursework in communication or a closely related discipline
• Two letters of recommendation
• A writing sample
• A personal statement outlining your background and goals
• Personal interview with the Graduate Director (or the Director’s designee)

Applicants are expected to have earned at least 12 undergraduate hours in communication or a related discipline.

Applicants who do not meet the requirements for regular admission may be admitted conditionally until the deficiencies are corrected. When a student is accepted conditionally, those steps allowing for conversion to regular status will be specified by the Department of Communication Graduate Committee.

Transfer Credit

A maximum of 12 graduate credit hours may be transferred into the program from regionally accredited institutions. All transfer credit requests are evaluated by the Department of Communication Graduate Committee.
