Dr. Deavor began his career at the Collegeof Charelston in 1983. During the1991-92 year he was a visiting scientist in the lab of Dr. James D. Winefordner at the University of Florida. He has been chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since August 1995, except for the academic year 2001-2002 when he served as interim dean of the School of Sciences and Mathematics. He received the Distinguished Teaching Award of the College of Charleston in 1991 and the Distinguished Advising Award in 2002. In 2002 he also received the Distinguished Achievement Award of the School of Sciences and Mathematics. He is an analytical chemist, an atomic spectroscopist, and also has an interest in chemical education. He has publications in Applied Spectroscopy, Journal of Chemical Education, Canadian Journal of Applied Spectroscopy, Environmental Science and Technology, Spectrochimica Acta B, Spectroscopy Letters, and Talanta. As department chair, he has been associated with the INBRE program since its inception and with its forerunner, the BRIN program. Dr. Norine Noonan, upon her departure in summer 2008, nominated him to be her successor and this was confirmed by the state and national INBRE offices.
Dr. Deavor is a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, Omicron Delta Kappa, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, and Alpha Chi sigma.
