Transferring Credits

Will my courses transfer back to CofC?
If you are participating in a bi-lateral exchange or with an independent program, you must have your courses pre-approved to determine whether they will be accepted by CofC as transfer credit.

First have your course selection checked and preapproved by CIE.

How do I have my courses pre-approved?
You will need to provide a description of each of your proposed courses abroad to the appropriate department chair(s) or \representative for them to evaluate the course(s). It is the discretion of the chair to award any and all transfer credit. You can click here to view the list of department chairs and departmental representatives. Approved courses must appear on the "Coursework Elsewhere Form" (green sheet) available in the CIE.

Grades vs. Credit?
CofC transfer credit policy requires that students earn the equivalent of a U.S. "C" or better to receive credit for approved courses taken outside of the College. The grades do not appear on your CofC academic record and therefore will not be factored into your GPA. Only the credit hours will be posted on your student record!

Financing Study Abroad

In general, financial aid is defined as any financial assistance a student may receive from sources such as scholarships, federal and state grants and loans.

What current Financial Aid is applicable: if you are currently receiving financial aid and want to know if your aid can be used for your desired study abroad program, you should speak with a financial aid counselor. Generally, the various types of financial aid which can be used are as follows:

Federal loans and grants and State Grants: can be used for all types of semester and year-long study abroad programs (CofC programs, bi-lateral exchanges and independent programs).

Life and Palmetto Fellows Scholarships: can be used for all types of semester and year-long study abroad programs (CofC programs, bi-lateral exchanges and independent programs).

CofC Scholarships, CofC Academic Scholarships, Founders Scholarships, and Foundation Scholarships: can only be used for CofC semester programs or bi-lateral exchanges where the student is charged normal CofC tuition.

Study Abroad Student Handbook

The Study Abroad Handbook is designed for CofC students studying abroad for a semester or summer.
