Douglas Ashley won first prize in piano when he was graduated from Northwestern University. Later he received his doctorate from there with his dissertation on "The Role of the Piano in Schumann's Songs". He also has the piano diploma from the Conservatory of Vienna where he had a scholarship from the Austrian government.
His study in London with Maria Curcio was the inspiration for his book "Music Beyond Sound. Maria Curcio, A Teacher of Great Pianists". He spent a number of summers in Italy as Artist-in-Residence with the Rome Festival Orchestra. Later he helped Maria Curcio at her masterclasses in Spain sponsored by Jeunesses Musicales.
Douglas Ashley has had six books of 20th century piano teaching pieces published including a dozen of his own. The Georgia Music Teachers' Association named him composer of the year for his piano suite "The Seasons."
He continues an active teaching and performing career in the U.S. and abroad, and has played in such places as New York University, the 92nd Street Y, and Carnegie Recital Hall in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the Chopin Academy in Warsaw. Beckstein Hall in Berlin, the Palazzo Cancelleria of the Vatican, and the Academy of Music in Prague.
