Upon hearing Marc Regnier’s debut recording (Musical Heritage Society), Soundboard Magazine wrote, “Marc Regnier’s debut album is about as pleasurable affair as any first recording I’ve heard since the advent of Manuel Barrueco. Regnier’s artistic preparation was admirably selected and his splendid pedigree shows: he got musical adventurousness from Timothy Walker, clarity from Aaron Shearer, and a luscious tone from Christopher Parkening.”
Mr. Regnier began his studies at the age of six with his father, a Clemson University art professor. At fourteen he studied in London with Timothy Walker while attending William Ellis grammar school. At sixteen, Regnier accepted an instructor position at Anderson College teaching applied classical guitar and ensemble. That same year he was offered a scholarship to study with Aaron Shearer at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. After Regnier’s graduation Dr. Andreas Holschneider, President of Deutsche Grammophon, heard a performance of Regnier’s and recommended that Marc continue his studies in Germany stating: “He (Marc Regnier) has a great talent, technically almost perfect…”
Quickly earning a reputation as a performer, Regnier came to the attention of the celebrated American virtuoso Christopher Parkening. Regnier promptly moved to California to continue his studies with Mr. Parkening and Rey de la Torre. Christopher Parkening later stated: “Marc Regnier is one of the most promising virtuosos today.”
Since that time Mr. Regnier has performed in most major cities of the United States having given several concerts at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City to Herbst Hall in San Francisco including invitations to perform in England and Eastern Europe. In addition, he has been heard on live radio and television broadcasts in the United States and Canada. He has made critically acclaimed solo recordings for the Musical Heritage Society and Marco Polo (Naxos) labels. After the Marco Polo release Fanfare Magazine wrote: “Rarely have repertoire and the skills of a particular artist been combined as effectively…I was struck then by the beauty of his tone, his subtlety, and his probing musicianship—his ability to sublimate his worthy technique to the demands of the composer…a significant recording on all counts.”
Mr. Regnier has published transcriptions and editings with Max Eschig Publications in Paris, Theodore Presser and Guitar Solo Publications. He has worked with composers such as Joaquin Nin-Culmell, Julian Orbon, David Maves and Edward Hart. As a teacher, Mr. Regnier has given master classes throughout the country and has served as adjudicator for international competitions. His students have won prizes in many national and international competitions. In 1999, Regnier was chosen to direct the Guitar Foundation of America Festival in Charleston. He is currently director of the International Guitar Series at the College of Charleston.
Marc Regnier is an Associate Professor of Music at the College of Charleston.
