REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Racing began in a 13-18 kt westerly with
a many higher gusts in big current that was also going West.
Teams went back and forth from their "heavy- heavy" to their
normal heavy crews in the words of Fran Charles which made for
some new happy faces on the course. Because of the big current
upwind legs were long and made the decision to go heavier a bit
easier. Courses were all windward leeward finish down wind to keep
the fleet out of the left side of the course where the barges and the
jibe mark would be. 7 breakdowns, and two redresses were granted that
kept our judges Bill Allan and Angelo Buscemi very busy. Redresses were
given for the days scores and not for the series which has forced us to
change the BKD to actual scores. Software problem ? we will work on it.
Tomorrow's the forecast is for less than 10 kts which will make for some
radically different conditions.
Day 2:
Racing never resumed because of a lack of a sailable breeze. It was so
becalmed the consensus among most the participants was to bag it before we
even had lunch ! During the delay teams kept busy by watching a tape of the
1987 super bowl and getting unwitting sailors to bet on the game, inventing
wiffle ball games in the hall way and balancing a flying scot trailer on its
two wheels with 6 sailors on top of it. So it was a good day. We called the
event off at 1:30 with Dartmouth taking home the hardware. Thanks again to
our judges who even held a short meeting with the coaches to determine how they
could perfect the ever evolving task of judging sailing.
