Students Dash for Trash

Saturday, October 25, 2008

Imagine......

hundreds of College of Charleston students

swarming through the streets of Charleston with shopping carts,
knocking each other out of the way
to pick up the most

cigarette butts, beer bottles and fast food wrappers.

Do you think this is a dream too good to be true?
Well, wake up and smell the litter, because this is what you are going to see on Saturday, October 25, 2008, when students come together for the 2008 Dash for Trash.

The event will start at Liberty Square (in front of the aquarium) at 9:30 am and end at 1:00 pm. Parking in the aquarium garage and lunch are free for participants.

Dash for Trash is an annual litter-collecting scavenger hunt instead of a routine cleanup. Each type of litter has a point value associated with it (bag of cigarette butts—5 pts, trash bag of used batteries—10 points, bagged dog litter—10 points!), and the student teams that pick up the most litter and accumulate the most points will win prizes.

Keep Charleston Beautiful and the College of Charleston have worked to make this a fun event. The benefits are a cleaner Charleston and the prevention of future littering through increased awareness of Charleston’s anti-litter laws.
