ARTH 362-090/ARTS335-090 Special Topics: Medieval Manuscript Illumination
This course is designed to introduce students to the history and techniques of medieval manuscript illumination from the 5th to the 15th century. We will study aspects of style and design ranging from early Irish manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells, to late Gothic manuscripts, such as the Tres Riches Heures of Jean de Berry. In addition to illustrated lectures and studio practicum, we will make extensive use of he collection of facsimile editions of medieval manuscripts in the College library. The studio component of this course allows students to investigate techniques, such as preparing vellum, grinding pigments, gilding, and working with inks and paints. There will be both collaborative and individual research projects, including short papers and the production of a page of an illuminated manuscript. If possible, we will include a visit to a collection of medieval manuscripts.
