We will study aspects of style and design ranging from early Irish manuscripts, such as the Book of Kells, to late Gothic manuscripts, such as the Tres Riches Heures of Jean de Berry. In addition to illustrated lectures and studio practicum, we will make extensive use of he collection of facsimile editions of medieval manuscripts in the College library. The studio component of this course allows students to investigate techniques, such as preparing vellum, grinding pigments, gilding, and working with inks and paints.
