Welcome to the College of Charleston's campus sustainability website! Sustainability is an important concept in the 21st century. While over 200 definitions of sustainability exist, a very inclusive one is "the ability to meet the needs of current generations without compromising the resources of future generations" (Our Common Future, 1987). This holistic concept of sustainability embraced by the Master of Environmental Studies program and other campus institutions has lead to a variety of innovative programs implemented on the College of Charleston campus. College campuses provide a unique opportunity to demonstrate sustainable approaches to the way we live, from improving aspects of our home to reducing the impact each invidual has on the Earth. The projects demonstrated here can easily be incorporated into residences, business and local governments. Please take time to browse the projects implemented on our campus, and to utilize the resources provided throughout.
