Matthew Walter

Matthew Walter (BA - The American College, London; BArch - University of Hawaii; MFA - University of Iowa) practiced architecture for over a decade before returning to school to receive his MFA in Scenic Design from the University of Iowa and has been working as an independent designer since 2005 and is currently based out of Chicago.

He is at the College of Charleston as the interim Visiting Assistant Professor of Scenic Design.

He has designed sets for over 40 productions for various theatres in Chicago, New York and regionally in the Midwest as well as for several universities. He worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for two seasons as the Resident Scene Design Assistant and had worked in various capacities as Paint Charge, Carpenter, and Technical Director for various theatre groups.  He has also run lecture courses, and taught design and technical studio courses at the University of Iowa, Coe College (Iowa), and Westwood College (Chicago).

Matthew has been fortunate to be involved in several premiere productions, most recently designing the set for “14” a new play by John Cameron about the so-called electro-shock “reparative therapy” experiments Brigham Young University officials performed on gay students in the mid-1970s.

Matthew is the Resident Scene Designer and building architect for Artists Collaborative Theatre in Elkhorn City, Kentucky, and an artistic member of Playback Theatre Chicago.
