About the Athletic Training Education ProgramThe Athletic Training Education Program at the College of Charleston is a major degree program that prepares students for careers and advanced studies in medicine (physician, physician assistant, nurse) physical therapy, athletic training and other allied health professions. This degree program also qualifies graduates to sit for the National Athletic Trainers' certification examination to become a Board of Certification (BOC) certified athletic trainer, also known as a Certified Athletic Trainers or ATC. Certified athletic trainers are employed in secondary schools, two-year institutions, four-year colleges and universities, professional sports teams, as well as in non-traditional venues such as sports medicine clinics and various industrial and recreational settings. The Athletic Training Education Program is a competitive and selective academic program and as such students must make application to and be selected into this academically rigorous program. Any College of Charleston student may declare the Athletic Training major but only students selected into the program will be eligible to complete the major degree requirements. Please read the Program Application Process webpage for more details. The Athletic Training major is structured to provide both an academic and clinical education. The academic course work includes such courses as anatomy, human and exercise physiology, kinesiology, orthopedic evaluation and assessment, pathology and treatment of illness, therapeutic modalities and therapeutic exercise, in addition to pharmacology, nutrition, counseling, and professional development. The clinical education component of the athletic training education program provides students the opportunity to participate in extensive clinical experiences in both the traditional collegiate, high school and semi-professional venues and the nontraditional setting of the sports medicine clinic, as well as other athletic health care settings. Program students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the clinical education venues. |
What Alumni Say“The Athletic Training program at the College of Charleston
gave me the hands-on experience and knowledge to become fully comfortable
in evaluating and treating sports-related injuries and conditions. I am
now a physician’s assistant in orthopedics and I utilize the tools
I learned through the College’s Athletic Training program every
day when caring for my patients.” For More Information ContactSusan L. Rozzi, PhD, ATC Department of Health and Human Performance |
