Course Description:
 
This course will include instruction on the basic skills, rules, strategies, in basketball and volleyball.

Course Objectives:     Competencies within the course should prepare students:
 
•    1. To develop and improve on basic skills in basketball and volleyball by participating in
         drills and competitive activities.
•    2. To provide a basic knowledge and understanding of the rules and strategies of
          basketball and volleyball through application in game situations.
•    3. To develop an awareness of coronary risk factors that may be associated with physical
          degeneration due to sedentary life styles
•    4. To develop an interest in activities which provide an opportunity for physical fitness
          through life long participation.

Description of Health Report:
 
Student will do one report on a health/ fitness related issue.  It has to be a minimum of 2 typed pages written with a separate title and reference page. The article may be from a magazine or newspaper of 2004-present. Biographies are not appropriate. The pages should be stapled. NO EMAIL PAPERS

The report should follow this outline:
•    Theme Sentence - State the primary point of the article.
•    Summary - Summarize the article including all major points of emphasis.State your opinion about the article and whether or not it was helpful concerning choices for improving your health/ fitness.
 
Criteria For Evaluation:
•    Written Exam Basketball (Lecture, Chap.1,2,5,6,9) 20pts
•    Written Exam Volleyball (Lecture, Chap. 1-11) 20pts
•    Skills Test Basketball 20pts
•    Skills Test Volleyball 20pts
•    Health Report 5pts
•    Instructor Evaluation on Participation 15pts

Bonus Points: You may also attend up to 5 C of C volleyball/basketball games and write a short summary including date, opponent, score, and opinion for 1 point per game. Must be handed in within a week after game. Participation in any CRS events 1/2 point each. Other bonus points opportunities will be announced. Jump Rope for Heart is bonus opportunity. Bonus point cap is 7 points.


 

Make-up Test: Make-up written (not skills) tests may be given with an excused absence, but it is the responsibility of the student to inform the instructor immediately upon missing a test to arrange for make-up tests. Unexcused make- ups may be given with 10 points per day reduction, but not skills tests which may be given over two class periods. Missing either day will result in loss of the skill tested on the respective day.

Attendance: Attendance is required. You may miss two classes without being penalized. For each additional unexcused absence, your final grade will be reduced by two points. Excused absences must be pre-approved by Mrs. Barnette or approved by the Undergraduate Dean's Office. No other excuses will be accepted. Those students not using the acceptable amount of cuts will have 2 bonus point per absence added to their final point total. Entering class after roll call is considered tardy. Three tardies will equal one absence on point deductions. Anyone missing three or more absences excused will not be eligible for bonus points.
 
Honor System: The College of Charleston Honor System is recognized in this course. For the specific details of responsibility and penalty, see the current issue of the College of Charleston Student Handbook. Take special note of the following NEW policy concerning grades and cheating. “Cases of suspected academic dishonesty will be reported directly to the Dean of Students.  A student found responsible for academic dishonesty will receive a XF in the course, indicating failure of the course due to academic dishonesty.  This grade will appear on the student’s transcript for two years after which the student may petition for the X to be expunged.  The student may also be placed on disciplinary probation, suspended (temporary removal) or expelled (permanent removal) from the College by the Honor Board.”
