The Center for Disability Services (CDS), created in August of 2000, is responsible for ensuring access to all programs and services of the College of Charleston as required by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990.
Overview of CDS Services
- SNAP - Services for Students
- Services and accommodations for students with any documented disability are provided by SNAP. Accommodations are based on medical and/or psychoeducational documentation submitted along with consultation with professors regarding the essential elements of the course and are determined on a case-by-case basis.
- Campus Accessibility
- Basically ADA compliant except for the historic buildings, campus
facility accessibility issues are addressed as situations requiring
modifications arise.
- Alternative Testing Site
- CDS houses and manages the alternative testing site providing an
area for students approved for services to take their tests with accommodations
such as extra test time, testing in isolation, use of readers or scribes,
and access to assistive technology.
- Education/Training for Faculty, Staff, and Students
- Education and training greatly enhance the understanding of disability issues resulting in improved services and cooperation among all personnel working with students with disabilities. CDS provides numerous educational and training opportunities throughout the year for faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Disability Resource Center for the College and the Community
- Students and faculty use our resources for IRB sanctioned disability-related
research. CDS administrators present to high school students with
disabilities transitioning to the College of Charleston, high school
guidance counselors, parent support groups and counselors from community
colleges.
