The following list has been adapted from the book College and the Learning
Disabled Student by C.T. Mangrum and S.S. Strichart.
- Provide a detailed, clearly organized syllabus.
- Choose textbooks that are clearly written and incorporate useful
visual aids.
- Take time to explain how to use textbook aids.
- Give students ample time for reflection and synthesis or reading
assignments. Give students a contextual framework for these assignments.
- Provide handouts that are visual and easy to read.
- Use a multisensory approach. Offer a variety of assignments (written
papers, oral presentations, group projects, 3D models, etc.) when
possible.
- Review course material often. Begin lectures with a review of previously
covered material.
- Try to engage students in class discussions. Ask questions.
Personalize course materials to actively involve students.
- Provide opportunities for previewing course materials. Use the chalkboard.
- Provide outlines of lectures. Use transitions to help students follow
lectures.
