  • Dr. Scott Baker ('93) received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida, working with Dr. James D. Winefordner and is currently doing a postdoc at the USDA in Beltsville, MD.
  • James Barton ('93) is the science department chairman at St. Paul's Country Day School near Hollywood, SC.
  • Dr. Mary T. Berry ('80) is an Associate Professor at the University of South dakota.
  • Sharon Davis Boggs ('97), married Ted Boggs in Georgetown in June, 1997. She is a graduate student at the University of Virginia.
  • Dr. Beth Carraway ('81) is an Assistant Professor in the Environmental, Ocean, and Water Resources Division of the Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M.
  • Dr. Kelly Catlin ('88)is a Development Chemist for Pfizer. in Groton, CT. She married Darren Whitehouse in Edinborough, Scotland on August 8, 1996. She did a a post-doc for Prof. Enders in Aachen, Germany after completing her Ph.D. at Emory.
  • Dr. George Cobb ('82) is an Associate Professor and Section Leader for the Department of Biological Sciences and The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at the Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, TX.
  • David Cook ('83) is with Compaq Computers in Houston, TX and is a manager of diagnostic software development. He received his Masters in Computer Science from Clemson.
  • Susan Corley ('96) is working in Washington, DC for Syracue Research Corp as a toxicologist.
  • Dr. Joanna Freeman Davis('91) received her doctorate from the University of South Carolina. Formerly a chemist with Clariant Chemicals, she is now with Allied Signal in Irmo, SC
  • Dr. Marion T. Doig, IIII ('65) is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the College of Charleston.
  • Dr. Henry Donato, Jr. ('68) is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the College of Charleston.
  • Debbie Farag ('90) is now associated with the San Jose State University Foundation. She received a masters degree from Texas A&M.
  • Maja Fickett ('93)teaches physical science and chemistry at Timberland High School.
  • Dr. Richard H. Gadsden ('50), a professor emeritus of pathology and laboratory medicine at MUSC, alumnus, friend, and benefactor of the College of Charleston Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, died December 25, 1997 at the age of 72. Dr. Gadsden’s affiliation with MUSC goes back nearly 50 years to his days as a graduate student. He has served on the university faculty since 1951. In May 1997 the university conferred upon Dr. Gadsden its prestigious Distinguished Faculty Service Award. The award honored his exceptional and sustained service and contributions in teaching, research, health care and public service to the university and citizens of South Carolina.
  • Dr. Edie Bowles Goldmsith ('90) received her doctorate from UNC-CH and is doing a post-doc at USC. She is married to Dr. Jack Goldsmith, an assistant professor at USC-AIken.
  • Justin Halberda ('97) has received an NSF grant to support his graduate work at NYU.
  • R. Curtis Haltiwanger ('69) is a scientific investigator at SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals where he runs the small molecule x-ray crystallography laboratory.
  • Jennifer Harmon ('93) is with the USDA investigating pesticides in oysters in the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Dr. Lee Hoong ('84) is a senior scientist at AtheroGenics in Norcross, GA.
  • James Hydrick ('94) is an environmental coordinator at Georgia Pacific and lives in Summerville, SC.
  • Brad Jackson ('92) married Karry Lynn Acree in Clinton, SC on February 28, 1998.
  • Dr. Joyce Prosser James ('88) is an NMR application specialist with Bruker Instruments in Fremont, CA.
  • Earle D. Jennings, Jr. ('56) a former chemist with Natrochem and a retired business manager with Memorial Medical Center, died Monday June 1, 1998 at his residence. He and his wife, Jane Blakely Jennings, were instrumental in establishing the Jennings Biochemistry Lab.
  • Caroline Johnson ('95) is attending medical school at MUSC and married June 28, 1997 to Tim Barfield.
  • Dr. Linda R. Jones ('89) is now an assistant professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the College of Charleston. She completed a post-doc at the Medical College of Wisconsin after completing her Ph.D. in physics at the Illinois Institute of Technology.
  • Dr. Camille Kassis ('92) received her Ph.D., from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is employed by Westvaco Corporation, North Charleston, SC.
  • Tim Kenny ('96) and his wife Jody were married in May '97. He is woring in Seattle at dental pharmaceutical company as a quality assurance chemist.
  • John King ('93) received a masters degree from Georgia Tech. He is employed with the City of Charleston Police Department.
  • Johanna Odenkirchen Killoy ('47) has been elected treasurer of th South Carolina Science Council and teaches chemistry at Dreher High School in Columbia, SC.
  • Dr. Rene Lachicotte ('89) received her Ph.D. from Emory and is the x-ray crystallographer at the University of Rocehster.
  • Andrea Li ('93) completed her M.S. at UNC-Wilmington and is now a natural product chemist with Hauser Chemical, Inc. in Boulder, CO.
  • Dr. Thomas J. Manning ('85) is a professor in the department of Chemistry at Valdosta State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida with Dr. J.D. Winefordner. He has received over $900,000 in grant money and has an active undergraduate research program.
  • Dr. Marty Martinez, MD ('88) received his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina Department of Chemistry and MD from MUSC. He is currently in the first year of an ophthamology residency at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is married to Prof. Shannon Studer Martinez of the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry of the College of Charleston.
  • Dr. P. Stanley May ('82) is an assistant professor at the University of South Dakota.
  • Blaine McCleskey ('95) received a Masters of Environmental Science in Environmental Studies from the Medical University of South Carolina and the University of Charleston in May 1997. He was a teaching assistant in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry. He has accepted a position with USGS in Boulder, CO.
  • Melissa Lee Merlau ('97) has received her masters from Northwestern University and is beginning her doctoral work. During the 1997-98 academic year she received the organic level teaching award.
  • Dr. Faith May Oliver ('93) married Doug Oliver on Nov. 25, 1995. She received her DDS from Memphis Dental School in June 1997. She is currently in a two-year pediatric dentistry residency at UT-Memphis. At the commencement exercise she received the Pediatric Dentistry Award of Excellence as well as the American Association of Orthodontics Award. She has recently published an article in The Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry.
  • Susan Weaver Oswald ('95) is working in a forensic lab in Arlington, TX .
  • Dr. John R. Paul, Jr. ('38) was presented the 1997 Career Achievement Award by the South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
  • Padgett Powell ('74) teaches fiction writing at the University of Florida.
  • Denie Peeler Ravenel ('74) teaches chemistry at Ashley Hall School in Charleston. She is president of the South Carolina Association of Chemistry Teachers. Her daughter, Erin, will be enrolling at the College this fall.
  • Shannon Lachicotte Schlueter('86) married John J. Schlueter on Saturday October 18, 1997 in St. Michael's Episcopal Church.She received a masters degree from the University of Puerto Rico.
  • Dr. Terry Singleton ('83) is the manager of R&D for High Point Chemical. He and his wife Kimberly were married October 1, 1994. He received his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1988.
  • Mark Semones ('89) has accepted a position with SmithKline Beecham, in King of Prussia Penn. He did a post-doc in the lab of Yoshiyo Kishi at Harvard after receiving his Ph.D. from Emory.
  • Rick Spivey ('84 ) has been promoted to Manager of Environment, Health, and Safety at Amoco Chemical's Cooper River Plant. His wife Pamela graduated from C of C in December '96 with a BS in psychology.
  • Mike Stebbins ('92) received his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
  • Jeff Tomilinson ('89) serves as Stockroom and Business Manager for the C of C Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. In December 1996 he married Carolyn Smith.
  • Dr. Jeff Twiss ('84) finished his residency training in neuropathology at Stanford and has been an acting assistant professor in the Department of Pathology at Stanford. He has accepted a faculty position in the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the UCLA Medical School. The position will combine both research and clinical duties.
  • Laura Workman-McConnell ('87) , received the Herbert L. Rothbart Outstanding Early Career Scientst of the Year award, which is the national early career award for ARS. Because she received the USDA award she was also put forward for a Presidential Early Career award for Scientists and Engineers. She was one of 60 winners of the presidential award.
  • Shannon Worsham ('89) is the Sales Account manger of the Southwest United States for Georgia-Gulf Corp. in Houston, TX. He is married to Nisha Tholstrup.
