From the 1942 Annual of the College of Charleston (thanks to Alex P. Jones, Class of '43):

THE CHEMISTRY SOCIETY

The Chemistry students, seeing the need for a society "whereby the interest in chemistry is stimulated and the know- ledge of chemistry increased by means of lectures, motion pictures, demonstrations, experiments, and means other than those offered in the curricular of the college," organized themselves to form the Chemistry Society of the College of Charleston.

The membership is restricted to chem- istry majors, who have (1) completed two years of chemistry, (2) been ap- proved by the Chemistry Department, and are acceptable to the members of the Society. The new society is recognized by the faculty and is under the guidance of the Chemistry Department.

The program of lectures for this year included: "The Building Blocks of Bio- Chemistry" by Dr. S. A. Morrell; "Chemical Therapy" by Dr. Foster Mar- tin; "Radio Activity" by Dr. Robert Taft; "J. Lawrence Smith" by Dr. H. Hughes; "The Relationship between the Sex Hormones and Cancer" by Dr. J. K. Donahue; "Oxidation and Reduction" and "In Nature's Workshop," two mov- ing pictures, and "Chemical Lumines- cence," a demonstration lecture given by two of the members.

A library of publications sent out by chemical manufacturers has been started so that by their use the members might keep up with modern developments in chemistry.
