IN SCIENCE AWARENESS
IS PRESENTED TO
PROFESSOR ELIZABETH M. MARTIN

of the College of Charleston, in recognition of over two decades of dedicated service to raising the level of science education in South Carolina. Her many activities have positively affected the lives of thousands of students and hundreds of science and mathematics teachers in the state of South Carolina, across the Southeastern United States, and at the national level.
She has co-directed the Low Country Science Fair, founded the Woodrow Wilson Institutes at the College of Charleston for summer enrichment of teachers, founded the Low Country Chemistry Alliance, been an exemplary teacher at the College of Charleston, been a strong supporter of the South Carolina Science Council and the South Carolina Association of Chemistry Teachers, and served on sectional and national committees of the American Chemical Society. In 1993 she completed a three year term as mentor of the United States Chemistry Olympiad Team and led it to its highest finish ever.
She has brought honor and recognition to the state of South Carolina and its citizens. Her tireless energy, willingness to assist with any project that can advance the cause of science education, her adherence to the highest standards for achievement, and her great compassion for individuals are qualities that set her apart as a superior leader.

For her selfless dedication to improving South Carolina's relative standing in science education; for her ability to conceptualize, create, organize, administer, and bring to fruition many projects which have enriched the lives of countless students, teachers, and colleagues; and for her professional life of teaching and service, the Office of the Governor, Dewees Island, Harbor Watch, General Engineering Laboratories, and the South Carolina Academy of Science are proud to present the 1996 Governor's Award for Excellence in Science Awareness to Professor Elizabeth M. Martin.
