1810     born August 14 , eldest child of Lewis Ladson Gibbes, Charleston, SC
1821-22     U of Pennsylvania Grammar School
1823-27     Pendleton Academy, SC
1827-29     South Carolina College (now USC), graduated with First Honors
1830-34     tutor and acting professor at South Carolina College
1835-36     attends Medical College of South Carolina (now MUSC), receives MD
1836-37     travels to Paris, France; meets Gay-Lussac, Dumas, and Dulong
1837     elected Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at the College of Charleston
1845     publishes "Comparisons and Discussions of all the Observations made in the US on the Transit of Mercury"
1850     publishes complete revision of the species Crustacea
1856     serves as acting president of the College of Charleston
1856-89     served as President of the Elliott Society of South Carolina
1875     presented paper on the "Synoptic Tables" at Elliott Society meeting in Charleston
1886     "Synoptic Tables" first published
1892     retires due to failing eye sight after 54 years of service to the College of Charleston
1894     dies November 21 in Charleston, SC
