"Education, the Role of the Liberal Arts, an Approach to Building Excellence in a College"

Thursday March 28, 2002 5:00 p.m. Science Center Room 123

Dr. Leon Mandell is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry of the University Of South Florida, Tampa, Florida. After completing his Doctorate at Harvard University in 1951 he worked in pharmaceutical industry for two years, served in the U.S. army for two years and then started his academic career at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He worked at Emory University from 1955 to 1984 where he won numerous awards for his teaching (including the E. Harris Harbison award of the Danforth Foundation for Distinguished Teaching) and research culminating with his appointment as the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Chemistry in 1980. From 1968-1984 he served as Chair of the Emory Chemistry Department. Dr. Mandell came to the University of South Florida in 1984 as Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He occupied this position for six years during which time the College experienced an exponential growth in research publications and extra-University research grants support. This productivity served as the justification for construction of new Bioscience and Marine Science facilities.

This lecture will involve examining the function of the liberal arts in serving to bring students to experience education. In doing so the centrality of the Sciences will be presented. The implications of these considerations to building excellence in a College will be noted.
