Gary Asleson Receives Ronald T. Pflaum Award

Gary L. Asleson, Alpha Theta 1971, Chapter Advisor for Gamma Delta Chapter at the College of Charleston, received a B.A. from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1971 and a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1975. After completing his doctoral thesis under the direction of Dr. C.W. Frank, he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the College of Charleston, where his success as an educator has paralleled a remarkable record of service to the Fraternity.

His key role in bringing Alpha Chi Sigma to the college of Charleston is clear from the recruitment events described in the petition for charter: “Dr. Gary Asleson…performed this first (pledge) ceremony at which 22 students pledged the Fraternity, but the response from other students was so encouraging that it was necessary to hold two additional pledge ceremonies.”

As Chapter Advisor since Gamma Delta’s founding in 1981, Gary Asleson has been a constant guiding presence, supporting the chapter in its recruitment and its professional and social activities, and guiding its members through their early careers as aspiring chemical scientists. The Brothers of Gamma Delta describe him as “a model of a true Alpha Chi Sigma member, for he lives by every one of our Objects.”
