On February 10 professors with the School of Sciences and Mathematics at the College of Charleston were honored at the State Capitol in Columbia.

Resolutions were read by lawmakers in both the House and Senate commending the school’s baccalaureate programs in natural sciences. From 1995-1998 the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education awarded Commendations of Excellence to all six of the College of Charleston’s bachelor’s programs in Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, Biochemistry, and Marine Biology.

In the House, the resolution was read by S.C. State Rep. Bobby Harrell. In the Senate, a similar resolution was read by S.C. State Sen. Ernie Passailague. Other members of the Lowcountry’s legislative delegation, along with several other state lawmakers, co-sponsored the resolutions.

The CHE reviews academic programs at South Carolina’s public colleges and universities every 7-8 years. To receive Commendations of Excellence, programs must demonstrate overall quality, including high quality instruction, significant student-faculty research activities, a high number of graduates and success in job placement of graduates.

State lawmakers say they wanted their fellow legislators and the people of South Carolina to know of the College of Charleston’s rare and remarkable achievement in having all of its natural science programs awarded the CHE’s top marks.
