Chapter 14 Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers, and Thiols

14.1 Structure and Classification of Alcohols
- OH hydroxyl group
Primary, secodnary, or tertiary

14.2 Naming Alcohols, Phenols, and Thiols

Name the longest chain containing the -OH group.
Number the main chain starting at the end closest to the -OH group.
Use suffix -ol. At times the prefixhydroxy- is more convenient to use.
Thiols contain -SH, the sulfhydryl group and are named using the suffix -thiol

14.3 Some Important Alcohols and Phenols

Methanol
Ethanol
Ethylene Glycol
Isopropyl Alcohol
Glyerol

14.4 Ethers

For simple ethers name the alkyl groups attahced to the ether oxygen and the word ether.
For complex ethers use alkoxy prefix.
Nomenclature
Cyclic ethers - heterocycles
