Today we discussed the following:

Chapter 11 Introduction to Organic Compounds

Condensed Formulas: CH3-CH3

Functional Groups: Thiols, Esters, Amines, & Amides

11.6 Constitutional Isomers

Isomerism: compounds with identical molecular formulas but a having a different arrangement of atoms
Constitutional isomers (or structural isomers): identical molecular formulas but the atoms are connected in a different order
Conformational isomers (conformers):same molecular formula and group connectivity but have a different spatial arrangement due to the rotation of a single bond.
     Number of Isomers

Homework: read in detail 11.4-11.6, 12.1-12.2, skim Chapter 2
Problems: 11.1, 11.3, 11.7, 11.9, 11. 13, 11.15, 11.17, 11.19, 11.23, 11.25, 11.27, 11.29, 11.33

Chapter 12 Alkanes

12.1 Alkanes

Structural formulas:
Expanded (complete) : shows all the individual atoms and their covalent bonds
Condensed : each carbon is grouped with its bonded hydrogen atoms
Line-bond : shows only the bonds from carbon to carbon
IUPAC Nomenclature: Counting by IUPAC
Conformations- free rotation about carbon-carbon single bonds

12.2 IUPAC Naming System for Alkanes

Classifying Carbon Atoms in Hydrocarbons
      Primary, secondary, and tertiary carbons
Alkyl Groups in Branched Alkanes
alkyl group- alkane missing one hydrogen atom

There will be a short quiz at the start of class on Wednesday the 18th.

Homework: read in detail 12.1-12.7
12.1, 12.3, 12.5, 12.7, 12.9, 12.11, 12.13, 12.15, 12.17, 12.19
