- These are not a replacement
for the printed sources, which you will find in the library (and that you
should purchase for yourself). But, these on-line versions might be adequate
for quick questions and formatting problems.
- Dictionary.com
- A well-organized and comprehensive
set of writing helps -- including "Ask Dr. Dictionary," a service that will
provide answers to your most pressing word and grammar questions; crossword
puzzles; a thesaurus; and links to such helps as "Wired Style," discussing
the use of language in the digital age. Well worth a visit!
- WWWebster Dictionary
- Don't let your essays leave
home without it.
- Educational Dictionary-Thesaurus
- A searchable dictionary and
thesaurus in one!
- Oxford English Dictionary
- Gives the histories of words
as well as much more substantive definitions than those provided by Webster.
- Bartlett's Familiar
Quotations
- There's no better way to gain
wit than by stealing someone else's.
- Resources for Poets
- You don't have to be a poet
to want to improve your writing -- and, by so doing, your grade, your intellect,
your income, your love-life, etc.
- Dictionary
of Rhetorical and Literary Terms
- You can't tell the players
without a program.

to "choosing a career."
- Sites
to Promote Academic Success: Provided by Linda Walsh, in the Department
of Psychology at the University of Northern Iowa, this is a page of links
to various on-line resources that might be of use to college students.
- National Resource Center
for the First Year Experience: Provided by the University of South
Carolina, this is the Home Page for their "First Year Experience" course.
Though some of the information is specific to the University of South Carolina,
much of the information is general enough to be of help to us all.
- Academic Advising
Resources on the Internet: Home page for the National Academic Advising
Association; click the "links" button for the materials that would be of
most use to you.
- Career
Choices: The University should not be treated as trade school,
and the focus of your education should not be on getting trained for a particular
job. However, it doesn't do any harm to consider the inevitable.
