In response to the question "how can the college facilitate the development
of a liberally educated person," we concluded:
1. Recognize a core belief - that all are capable of higher order thinking
- and thus demonstrate respect for students' intellectual capabilities.
2. Maintain high expectations and rigorous evaluation of students through
admissions practices, faculty evaluation process and graduation standards.
3. Undertake regular and honest communication with pre-college educators
about the College's liberal arts and sciences curriculum and the College's
expectations of student performance. Undertake regular and honest
communication with the public about our curriculum and what is expected
when one embarks on a college career.
4. Create more opportunities for faculty-faculty/ faculty-student
exchanges outside of the classroom. Facilitate the development of more
durable linkages between faculty and between students and faculty. Related
suggestions: a) investigate scheduling reconfiguration; b) investigate
plans to redistribute advising responsibilities; and c) encourage the
creation of spaces conducive to faculty-student exchanges.
