Our Inquiry Group convened yesterday, 1 October, for about an hour. Present were Rick Heldrich, Leila Thomas, Roger Daniels, David Cohen, and Julia Eichelberger. We began by looking the "C of C Gen Ed Goals and Objectives" that were in the packet, since that is what everyone will be trying to get a consensus on eventually. After some discussion about what some of the terms meant, a sort of consensus in our group emerged. We all thought there should be more emphasis on, and/or specification of, the CONTENT of a Gen Ed curriculum. There should be some way we can characterize WHAT a person learns as well as the sorts of skills and attitudes we hope to foster. We agreed that in the present curriculum, there is a certain amount of content specified--ie., a foreign language, Hist 101-102, etc. We all thought that the new goals and objectives should not be so abstractly worded as to allow for all content to be completely negotiable. We did not have time to move on to the next question of what that content should be. Over this question we will probably not find such ready consensus. 6cwc,8mC3b7COQZce3 Ariale hope to foster.
