Look up "educated person" on the WWW and you will find Zia Wesley-Hosford's Educated Beauty," Where you get educated about good looks and great health. " Looking to the Internet for answers is a bit like putting eight facultyn g together to determine the one supreme characteristic of an educated person. Each participant addressed concerns with the aim of improving the educational enterprise. Interests included:
* Understanding and enhancing physical and psychological health
*Addressing internationalization ( cultural issues)
*Race and gender awareness
* Skill and knowledge base development
Playing the " Fives" exercise ( not poker; we arenot from the high roller set) is recommended for all groups. Doing this exercise will provide perspective on our task this semester. It would be neat to get from each faculty member his/her top names and books for starters. Thanks to Ed McGuire for this wonderful exercise. Our choices reflected our awareness of important socio cultural, political, technological, and historical themes that have shaped our educational experiences. We concluded that an educational person knows:
* analytical and critical thinking skills
*that answers are provisional
*that learning is lifelong and is part of a dynamic and growing context
*that education is about conceptual and intellectual tool building and leaves one with a set of skills that may be used habitually and automatically
that being educated involves drawing upon knowledge using intellectual processes to address problems as they are confronted.
If you didn't find the answer here, maybe you'll want to consult with Zia. Chris Starr, Recording Agent; Charles K. ( Ed.) and the Fab 4
